480 state lawmakers ship open letter urging Congress to go voting legal guidelines
In an open letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky. Calif.), 480 legislators of the State urge Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
In the letter, lawmakers, all Democrats, say that these two laws are particularly urgent when you consider that Republicans have tried to restrict electoral access in more than 20 states.
Make no mistake: These unpatriotic attacks on our elections will undermine confidence that elections in America may represent the will of a controlled and balanced majority, they write. “They pose a deep threat to our democracy and will long cause material damage to underrepresented communities.”
“The world is watching. American democracy is on the brink, ”they continue. “As future generations judge whether we have reached this crucial moment in history, we hope that you will be numbered by our side in the struggle to maintain this experiment of self-government.”
The letter was sent out ahead of the Senate procedural vote to debate the law. It is unlikely that you will have enough support to survive a filibuster. The White House has signaled that it is ready to resume filibuster talks if legislation, one of the Democrats’ top priorities, does not survive.
